Camp Counselor

Camp Counselors have a direct impact on the campers’ experiences each and every day! Along with your Co-Counselor, you will be responsible for your own group of campers, leading activities and building relationships within your group. Great Counselors are patient and love having fun and leading games with children in their assigned age group. Purpose:

Counselors are responsible for the overall supervision and organization of campers with the aim of providing a healthy, safe, and fun camp environment. Beber Camp counselors exhibit strong leadership skills and are creative in planning and implementing programs and activities for campers. Cabin counselors live in a bunk with a group of 12-16 of campers and other co-cabin counselors.

Dates: June 6 – August 9, 2025

Salary: Competitive summer salary! The minimum starting salary is $2,000.00 for ten weeks. Room and board included

Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)

  • Must be 18 years of age or high school graduate.
  • Must submit a health history record and examination form prior to the first day of work.

Essential Job Functions:

Direct, supervise, and organize a group of campers in the cabin, during activities, and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.

  • Apply youth development principles in working with campers through appropriate communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
  • Ensure proper supervision of campers at all times in coordination with co-counselors, including when residing in cabins with two or three other staff members and campers.
  • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.

Develop and implement program activities for campers that are consistent with the mission of Beber Camp.

  • Responsible for leading and assisting with teaching activities inside and outside the cabin.
  • Actively participate and take leadership roles in all program areas as assigned.
  • Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
  • Participate in program areas such as waterfront, Challenge Course, camping trips (including on and off-site in tents), all camp activities, evening programs, athletics,  arts and crafts, fine arts, and general programming as directed.
  • Oversee the proper use, maintenance, and return of all equipment in your group’s possession.

Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.

  • Be alert to campers’ and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems, and discuss with the camp health center staff and/or camp director when appropriate.
  • Tend to health, hygiene, and first aid care of your campers to your level of training.  
  • Ensure, at all times, the confidentiality of campers’ personal or health information, unless otherwise directed by the Camp Medical Staff, Assistant Directors, or Camp Director.
  • Promote emotional safety for campers and staff by maintaining an environment of encouragement and respect.  
  • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure proper utilization, care, and maintenance; report necessary repairs promptly to the Camp Director or Program Leader.

Division Leader

Responsible for supervising a camper age group, including developing and coordinating activities, themes, and schedules for the division while coaching Counselors through camper behavior challenges. Division Leaders work closely with Debbie, our Community Care Director, and Counselors to coordinate divisional programming and activities. Minimum Requirements:

  • Previous leadership experience
  • Previous overnight camp counselor experience

Basic Overview:

  • Report to Director or Assistant Director
  • Manage a division consisting of:
    • up to 120 campers
    • up to 35 counselors
  • Supervise a Head Counselor
  • Plan and run training sessions for staff
  • Supervise and support your counselors and campers
  • Communicate with camper parents
  • Develop agendas and run staff meetings
  • Plan and lead divisional overnight camping trips and day trips for campers and staff

Detailed Overview:

  • Supervise counselors

Area Director

Responsible for the overall supervision of staff and campers in a particular area of camp with the aim of providing a healthy, safe, and fun camp environment. Beber Camp supervisors exhibit strong leadership skills and are creative in planning and implementing programs and activities for campers. Area Directors live out of bunk, in a dorm-style setting, with other supervisors. Qualifications:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Direct, supervise, and organize specialists and counselors working in the specific area.

Community Care

Experienced Social Workers supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of all campers and being knowledgeable resources for counselors.


Nurse

Creating a safe environment for our campers and staff is our #1 priority each summer! The Camp Nurse is an experienced medical practitioner, but also a caring voice, kind ear, and passionate team member. Reporting to the Health Center Administrator, the Camp Nurse is part of a care team, consisting of other nurses, an on-site or remote physician, and our camp families. Camp Nurses work to provide exceptional physical and emotional care to our summer community.

Dates: June 12 – July 13, 2023 OR July 15 – August 9, 2025 (There may be opportunity for some nurses to begin work on June 1)

Salary: Competitive salary (RN/NP/PA starts at $1,000/week, LPN starts at $800/week). Room, board, and childcare provided!

Position Requirements:

  • L.P.N. R.N., N.P., or P.A. license and the ability to practice medicine in the State of Wisconsin
  • Desire to work and live in a camp community
  • Previous experience in a summer camp setting preferred
  • Previous experience with children preferred
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications
  • Valid drivers’ license, proof of medical insurance

The Team: You will be working with 4 other nurses for the full camp session managed by our on-site Health Center Administrator. We have a doctor on-site. Each member of our care team is critical to providing friendly, caring, and outstanding care to our camp community.

What will I be doing? As part of a passionate, dedicated team, your primary focus will be:

  • Maintaining accurate and detailed medical records.
  • Providing outstanding patient care for our campers (350 campers) and staff (150 staff).
  • Administering medications to campers.
  • Communicating with parents.

Physical Aspects of the Job:

Nursing Assistant

The Nursing Assistant is responsible for assisting in providing health and safety services to campers, camp staff, and visitors.  

Dates of Employment: June 12 – July 13, 2025 OR July 15 – August 9, 2025 (There may be an opportunity for a nursing assistant to begin on June 6)

Essential Job Functions:

  • Under the direction of the Health Center Administrator, assist in providing health care and first aid services for camp staff, campers, and visitors.
    • ­Assist with daily medication management, administering campers’ daily medication under a nurse’s supervision and administering over the counter medication as instructed by the supervising nurse or doctor
    • ­Help supervise and provide medical care for people admitted to the Health Center
      • Regularly check sick rooms and on people admitted to the Health Center and conduct temperature checks
      • Provide snacks and meals, and clean-up as needed
      • Make and strip beds, do laundry as needed
    • Provide CPR and First Aid coverage as needed at designated times and locations
    • Provide direct care to campers and staff within the scope of their skills, Beber Camp’s health care standing orders, and generally recognized treatment procedures
    • Accompany campers and camp staff to off-site urgent or other medical visits
  • Monitor and maintain healthy and safe practices while working in the Health Center and throughout Beber Camp.
    • Ensure athletic areas across camp and waterfront have adequate water, sunscreen, first-aid supplies, and other injury-prevention and safety materials
    • Check and re-stock emergency backpacks in all areas of Beber Camp
    • ­Assist in ensuring camp staff, campers, and visitors wash their hands before entering the dining area
    • Work with other staff to minimize/eliminate health and safety risks
  • On a rotating basis, you may be first contact to be awakened at night from 10:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Office Assistant

Office Assistants provide support to the Office Manager and the full-time team. This includes informing and educating inquiring parents and other administrative tasks required.

Dates of Employment: June 6, 2023 – August 11, 2025

Essential Job Duties:

  • Answering phones and dealing with parent questions, triage of camp forms (maintenance, housekeeping, kitchen to appropriate head staff), connecting callers to other offices and staff members, printing out emails, filing, sorting mail, and packages, copying, etc.
  • Sort summer canteen
  • Work with the Year-round and Summer Leadership team to ensure a safe, fun, and successful summer camp season

Qualifications:  (Minimum Education and Experience)

  • Experience with Campminder is preferred, but not required.
  • 1-2 years of work experience in an administrative role

Photographer

Photographers further the mission of the camp by assisting in the development and delivery of a photography program that is safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities. Assist in daily photograph taking and other media-related tasks required.

Dates of Employment: June 6 – August 11, 2025

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Develop and deliver a photography program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers
    • Write lesson plans that meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers.
    • Evaluate abilities of campers and staff.
    • Design and deliver photography activities that make use of different shot types, lens, and make use of the camp’s natural environment.
    • Evaluate the success of the photography program.
  1. Assist in capturing the daily life of camp with photography and videography
    • ­Coordinate with the media team to help capture all the daily required photos listed on the shot list.
    • Edit, shortlist, and upload photos of campers and staff from the day into the photo management systems (CampMinder & Waldo Photos)
    • Other media responsibilities include but are not limited to; video, blogs, and social media.
  2. Assist in the management and care of the photography equipment
    • ­Maintain the photography equipment, including DSLRs, lens, memory cards, camera accessories, and photography computer.
    • ­Ensure the security of the photography equipment and accessories, and make sure the media office is secure at the end of a work day.
    • ­Conduct a daily check of the office and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
    • Clean the media office, keeping it free of hazards and debris.

Other Job Duties:

  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
  • ­Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions. ­
  • Assist in the planning of any special events.

Relationships:
Program Specialists often have direct relationships with the counseling staff and may actually serve as a Counselor with a camper group when not on duty as a photographer when needed. Note should be made of the role of the media staff in regard to this position and the care of the media equipment.

Physical Aspects of the Position:

Some physical requirements of a Photography position could be endurance including moving location to location. Requirements for eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/program and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat.

Kitchen Assistant

To assist the Head Chef in preparing and serving nutritious meals and in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen, dishwashing area, and dining hall.

Dates of Employment: May 22, 2025 – August 11, 2025

Essential Job Duties:

  • Assist in the daily operations of the camp food service.
    • Assist in the preparation of food as the menu indicates including washing and peeling.
    • Set up food, supplies, and utensils for dining hall distribution.
    • Store food and leftovers at proper temperature.
  • Assist in routine sanitation of the kitchen and related equipment.
    • Clean and maintain all food-preparation and storage areas.
    • Wash all dishes, serving and preparation equipment, and utensils according to regulated washing methods and temperatures.
    • Reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle as indicated through the camp’s procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation and packaging of food for use outside the camp dining hall.
    • Work with cooks and other staff in reviewing pack out requests to ensure adequate and accurate amounts and variety.
    • Prepare and store pack out food according to camp and health code procedures.
    • Advise staff on equipment or preparation materials needed for identified menu choices.

Preferred Experience and Skills: (Minimum Qualifications and experience):

  • Knowledge of food preparation and serving, storage of food, and dishwashing procedures is preferred.

Housekeeper

Our campers and staff count the days all year until they have the opportunity to come back to summer camp. Our 340-acre site and its collection of cabins, activity areas, and communal gathering spaces are literally a home away from home for our summer camp community. Our facilities team ensures that the buildings and grounds are maintained in a safe and professional manner. Working under the direction of the Facilities Manager, this position is primarily responsible for maintaining a clean environment for our campers, staff, and visitors.

Dates of Employment: May 22, 2023 – August 11, 2023

Essential Job Duties:

  • Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms.
  • Cleans, mops, washes, buffs, and vacuums floors.
  • Empties trash and recycling.
  • Maintains outside walk areas, including sweeping debris and washing walkways.
  • Cleans and polishes fixtures.
  • Washes windows.
  • Dusts and vacuums furniture.
  • Tracks cleaning supply use and coordinates with the Facilities Director to ensure
    appropriate supplies are always in-stock and available.
  • Observes all safety precautions and comply with all health and safety rules and
    procedures.
  • Attends staff and in-service training during the summer.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Aspects of the Position:

  • This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day
  • The employee must frequently lift and move items over 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration.
  • The employee will be exposed to outside weather conditions.

Maintenance Worker

Under the direction of the Site Director, assist in the maintenance and repair of the camp’s buildings, grounds, equipment and other facilities consistent with the mission and established policies and procedures of the camp.

Dates of Employment: May 22, 2025 – August 11, 2025

Essential Job Duties:

  • Maintain camp grounds
    • Operate necessary grounds care equipment such as mower, tractor, chain saws, etc., in a safe and efficient manner.
    • Be aware and make necessary changes to hazards found on camp grounds.
  • Assist in the repair of buildings and facilities.
    • Make minor repairs as needed
  • Perform janitorial and general maintenance duties
    • Sweep, scrub, wax floors, wash windows and screens, put up and take down screens and storm windows – repair same.
    • Dispose of trash and waste. Manage recycling.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with prescribed regulatory compliance guidelines, including local, state and federal guidelines as well as American Camp Association accreditation standards.
    • Assist with emergencies on physical plant and site.
    • Assist in conducting initial and end-of-season inventory
    • Store equipment for safety.
    • Follow schedule for checking physical plant and equipment for safety, cleanliness and good repair.

Preferred Experience and Skills: (Minimum Qualifications and experience):

  • Ability to work on a team, relate and work well with others.
  • Self-starter and organizer.
  • Ability to accept guidance, direction, and supervision.
  • Proficiency in the safe and proper use of power equipment and tools, heavy and light machinery, and building materials.
