Marc Altman: the Man Behind the Lens
Marc Altman: The Man Behind the Lens
By: Ally Axelband
Prior to taking on a photography apprenticeship and moving to Phoenix, Marc Altman and his wife Becky (Golden) spent seven months circling the world. In 2008, he would move again to Chicago, when Becky took a job as the assistant director of Beber Camp, and his life would come full circle as well. Marc would be “pleasantly surprised” to return as photographer, this time, to the place he and Becky met years before while working as counselors. He would strive to “give great photography to camp”, and he has.
Marc Altman and Beber Camp have “clicked” for years. Besides meeting his wife, Marc’s most “picture perfect” memories of Beber Camp include: the Wisconsin State Fair (the rooster, milk, and fried Milky Way Bars), the ultimate Frisbee hobby, and his senior Ramot trips to Madison and Evanston. He’s also enjoyed sharing an office with Cheryl Kaplan! Marc credits camp with teaching him life skills and discovering himself. He remains close with his friends from Beber, recently attending the weddings of both Danny Entin and Daniel “Webber”, and he’s looking forward to Scott Factor’s wedding this coming September.
In addition to Marc’s work at 3BC, he is a freelance photographer often shooting in documentary style. He recently documented a grade school in St. Louis and worked with an organization of American volunteers who spent a week teaching ultimate Frisbee to Israeli and Palestinian kids in the West Bank of Israel. A future project will include a trip to a clinic in Guatemala documenting an organization whose mission is providing prosthetic limbs to the underprivileged. He also plans to continue his work for non-profit and corporate clients, and production of editorial commercial material.
Every bit the perfectionist, Marc’s photographs capture the magic of Beber Camp. His thoughtful attention to beauty and detail make for professional and provoking imagery. A collection of Marc Altman’s photos of Beber Camp can be viewed by clicking here.
