Safety, Health, and Nutrition
Safety is our first priority. All of our administrative team and hobby leaders are CPR and First Aid certified. At each hobby activity area, there are set policies and procedures for safety. All safety and protective equipment is provided by camp and required to be worn at appropriate sporting activities.
Health
The air-conditioned David S. Platt Dispensary located in the Barkin-Uihlein Health Center, is located on-site and is staffed by full time nurses-in-residence and doctors. In addition, we have two local clinics and a doctor on call 24 hours every day. Beber Camp is just minutes from Waukesha Memorial Hospital.
The health center team places emergency backpacks at program areas throughout camp. These backpacks are filled with supplies like emergency inhalers, epi-pens, as well as bascic first aid equipment. On any out of camp trip, campers health forms are sent to expediate necessary treatment.
All medications, except inhalers, are kept with the nurses and dispensed at meals and before bed.. For the past five years, we have partnered with CAMP MEDS to insure campers medication is packaged and dated daily by a pharmacy.
Nutrition
Nutrition is an extremely important aspect of life at Beber Camp for two reasons: tradition and health.
First, our camp is a Kosher facility that serves only foods which have been produced under rabbinical supervision. Since Kashrut is an indispensable part of Judaism, we believe that our camp goals of knowledge, love and pride for Jewish culture, heritage and religion could not be fulfilled without it.
In addition to maintaining the desired level of Kashrut, we ensure that the meals we offer are nutritious, balanced, and filling. Our two-week rotating menu provides enough variety so that our campers’ interest in their meals is kept alive throughout their stay at camp. Fruit are offered at every meal and salads are available with every lunch and dinner. We are pleased to notice a trend towards healthier food choices from our campers in the past few years. This is why we increased the number of salad bars in our dining room from two to three. We are also pleased to offer some fruit and vegetables from our own biodynamic garden which campers look after during the summer.
All cookies and cakes are made from scratch in our own pareve bakery and every Friday morning some of our older campers participate in the making of challah bread for Shabbat.
Food allergies have become a growing concern over the past few years. As a result, we prepare meals that are nut free. Our bakery is also nut and dairy free. The salad room serves peanut butter and jelly in individual servings, in order to avoid cross contamination. Our kitchen staff works hand in hand with the health center staff in dealing with food allergies.
Beber Camp is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). This accreditation assures families that camps have made the commitment to a safe, nurturing environment for their children. For more information about the ACA, click here. For more information about ACA accreditation, click here.
